Tarmac Scales Commercial Training and Compliance with Built Intelligence Academy

Tarmac is one of the UK’s leading sustainable construction materials and solutions businesses, supporting major infrastructure and building projects across the country. With a large commercial team spanning surveying, estimating, and project management, Tarmac relies on a deep bench of contractual and commercial knowledge to keep projects compliant, well-managed, and successful

The Challenge

With a workforce ranging from trainees to senior commercial leaders, Tarmac needed a way to deliver consistent, trackable commercial and contractual training at scale. Specifically, the business needed a learning platform that could:

  • Provide a single learning management system where previously none existed.
  • Cover a broad range of contract and commercial topics, including NEC3 and NEC4 training, JCT training, health and safety, and construction management.
  • Support competency frameworks to structure development across different roles and experience levels.
  • Allow Tarmac to mandate essential courses, such as full NEC training, for specific teams.
  • Give managers visibility of training take-up and engagement through analytics.
  • Offer flexible, on-demand learning that staff could fit around project workloads and revisit whenever needed.

It’s quite important not to just use it for the commercial team. There are lots of operations teams out there with project managers who have to make commercial decisions as well, and they very much benefit from what the Academy has to offer.

Outcomes

  • A Genuine One-Stop Shop for Construction Training: With 700–800 courses covering NEC3/NEC4, JCT, health and safety, the Construction Playbook, and competency frameworks, Tarmac now has a single platform for all its commercial and contractual training needs.
  • Scaled Across the Business: Academy usage has grown from the surveying team alone to around 100 users spanning surveying and estimating, with Tarmac aiming to double that to 200 users, including operations teams and project managers who make commercial decisions.
  • Mandated, Trackable Compliance Training: Tarmac mandates key courses, such as full NEC training, for specific teams, using Academy’s analytics to monitor footfall and engagement and give clear visibility of who has completed what.
  • Flexible Learning That Fits Around Project Work: On-demand webinars mean staff can revisit training whenever they need to, with end-of-course assessments helping confirm and track understanding across the team.

The Built Intelligence Academy gave Tarmac the construction training platform it had never had, and has grown into a core part of how the business develops commercial talent, from trainee surveyors to senior managing QSs. With NEC training now mandated for key teams and usage set to double to 200 users, the Academy continues to support Tarmac’s wider ambition of building commercial capability across surveying, estimating, and operations.
