£250m Contract Management Success: Port of Dover’s Western Docks Revival

Case Study

£250m Contract Management Success: Port of Dover’s Western Docks Revival

The Port of Dover’s Western Docks Revival (DWDR) is a £250 million infrastructure project transforming the UK’s busiest port. The scheme includes a new cargo terminal, distribution centre, and waterfront development to enhance capacity and efficiency. Given the scale and complexity of the works, Port of Dover approached BI during Stage 3 of the 10-year project, after recognising the need for an enterprise-level contract management solution to support project delivery.

The Challenge

Before implementing FastDraft™, Port of Dover used a CDE (Common Data Environment) for contract management which was not purpose built for NEC contract management. This presented certain challenges:

  • NEC Contract coverage: The CDE’s inability to support NEC clauses X22 and X29
  • Not a scalable contract management solution: The organisation needed an enterprise-level system that was able to handle multiple projects with varying needs.
  • Data Migration: With historic contract data stored in the CDE, Port of Dover needed a solution which could handle a complex data migration to a single source of truth for contract management.

Recognising the need for a more advanced solution, the Port of Dover undertook a thorough review of contract management platforms. The selection process focused on finding a system that could seamlessly integrate with their existing workflows while offering the flexibility to scale.

The BI Toolkit Solution

Following extensive evaluation, the Port of Dover selected FastDraft™ for its unrivalled contract coverage, flexibility, and track record of supporting large-scale infrastructure projects. FastDraft™ provided:

  • Enterprise-ready contract management – A scalable solution that could be used across multiple projects, ensuring long-term value.
  • Comprehensive NEC3 compliance – Pre-configured contract workflows to streamline contract administration, reducing risk and ensuring compliance.
  • Enhanced visibility and control – A centralised, auditable system provided real-time insights into project performance, contract status, and key obligations.
  • Ready for migration – Built with an open API, FastDraft™ is able to facilitate the migration of critical historic data from legacy systems.

Port of Dover staff received extensive training and workshops along with access to a test environment to ensure both system administrators and general users were fully trained on FastDraft™ ahead of full implementation. This meant users were ready to maximise the benefit of FastDraft™ from day one.
