2021 saw the launch of our APC training modules – a series of 6 webinars giving core support and a great way to get on track with your RICS APC with a foundation of easy to follow training webinars and courses delivered by qualified RICS assessors and mentors.
The webinars form the foundation of the supported training course and are available throughout the year with a subscription to the Built Intelligence training academy.

Webinar 1 : Overview of the APC
This course aims to provide a step by step walk through taking the APC by structured training, preliminary review or straight to assessment - from start to successful completion. The course considers each element of the APC from its overall objectives through the levels of competency required, the documentation to be completed and the final assessment. The course is intended for anyone just starting their APC journey or those who are some way through and wishing to keep on track. The course is 1 hour in duration.
After studying this course you should be able to:-
- Understand the objectives of the APC and how to demonstrate these
- Record experience in your diary
- Work effectively with your Counsellor
- Understand the process for taking the APC by structured training from start to successful completion, including the assessment process (written submission and interview)
Webinar 2 : Written submission
This webinar walks through what is required in the written submission process, how to record and evidence your experience and the levels of competence required. The course is intended for anyone just starting their APC journey or those who are some way through and wishing to keep on track. The course is 1 hour in duration.
After attending this module you should be able to:-
- Understand what to include in your final written submission
- Accurately record your relevant experience and write your case study
- Keep your CPD history up to date and differentiate between formal and informal forms
Webinar 3 : APC Final Assessment interview
Our third module covers the APC journey from submission through to the final assessment interview and explains how to apply and the choices and options to be made through ARC and tips and hints for preparing for your interview. The course is intended for anyone just starting their APC journey or those who are some way through and wishing to keep on track. The course is 1 hour in duration.
After studying this module you should be able to:-
- Understand the submission process
- Submit your documents, including the Counsellor sign-off process
- Be prepared for the interview
- Understand the assessment criteria
- Understand the referral and appeals procedure, in the worst case scenario
Webinar 4 : Mandatory Competencies Level 1
In this webinar we will cover the Level 1 Mandatory Competencies which all candidates must satisfy. These include:
- Accounting principles & procedures
- Business planning
- Conflict avoidance, management and dispute resolution procedures
- Data Management
- Diversity, inclusion & teamworking
- Inclusive environments
- Sustainability
Looking at the core content and knowledge needed, including RICS guidance and legislation. This will assist with the writing of the Summary of Experience and successfully preparing for the final assessment interview.
Once you have completed this module, you will be able to:-
- Understand the knowledge required for the Level 1 Mandatory Competencies
- Record your knowledge in your Summary of Experience
- Apply the knowledge to your Case Study & CPD record
Webinar 5 : Mandatory Competencies Level 2
In this webinar we will cover the Level 2 Mandatory Competencies which all candidates must satisfy. These include:
- Client care
- Communication and negotiation
- Health and safety
We will look at the core content and knowledge you will need, including RICS guidance and legislation. This will assist help you to write up your Summary of Experience and successfully prepare for the final assessment interview.
After completing this course you will be able to:-
- Understand the knowledge required for the Level 2 Mandatory Competencies
- Record your knowledge & examples in your Summary of Experience
- Apply your knowledge to your Case Study & CPD record
Webinar 6: Ethics, Rules of Conduct and Professionalism
In this final session, we will cover the Level 3 Mandatory Competencies: Ethics, Rules of Conduct and Professionalism. This is the only competency which can lead to an automatic referral in your final assessment interview, so getting it right first time is essential.
We will cover a variety of topics include:
- Rules of Conduct for firms and for members
- 5 Ethical and Professional standards
- Relevant RICS Professional Statements and Guidance Notes, e.g. relating to conflicts of interest
- 5th Anti Money Laundering directive
- Bribery Act 2010
After completing this module, you will be able to:-
- Understand the knowledge & experience required for the Ethics, Rules of Conduct and Professionalism competency
- Record your knowledge & examples of experience in your Summary of Experience
- Apply your knowledge to your Case Study and your CPD record
- Understand why ethics is integral to being a Chartered Surveyor
